What Happens in a Facelift Consultation?

17330-a-doctor-and-couple-viewing-an-x-ray-pvThe decision to undergo any form of surgery isn’t something you should take lightly. This includes a Rhytidectomy, or facelift. Although cosmetic surgery is obviously extremely safe, it’s still a great idea to be fully informed about the procedure and what happens afterwards. At our cosmetic surgery clinic in Sarasota, we always provide our patients with the opportunity to ask as many questions as they need to during their consultation with us. With that being said, we understand that most people remain uncertain about what happens during a facelift consultation, so we’d like to give you a quick guide on what to expect.

Medical History

Be prepared to discuss your personal health in some detail, including any medication you’re taking, any existing medical conditions you’re managing, and if you’ve had cosmetic surgery before. You may also be asked about any vitamin or mineral supplements you’re currently taking or any alternative medicines you’re using. You will be asked questions about your particular lifestyle choices, including smoking, drinking and drug use.A skilled surgeon looks at your overall health as a key part of evaluating your suitability for a facelift, and will then base their final decision on this and other factors.

Examination

Before a surgeon begins the process of creating a more youthful “you”, they first need to examine your current facial structure, identify areas of concern and discuss what areas you’d like to improve. This includes the surgeon taking measurements and photographs of your face, so they can build a complete picture of what you currently look like and what you’d like to look like after the procedure is complete. You should expect your surgeon to spend a significant amount of time examining you, ensuring that you’re both in agreement as to what the next steps for you should be.

Expectations

Once the examination is complete it’s then time to discuss your facelift options with you, which will include any potential risks for you, the type of anesthetic that will be used, and what you can expect during the recovery process. An ethical surgeon will only perform facial enhancements on patients who are suitable for this type of procedure. Not every person is suitable for facelift surgery, so please bear that in mind before attending your consultation. Facelift surgery can enhance your current appearance, but there are limits to what is possible.

Questions To Ask

You should never be afraid to ask your surgeon questions; in fact, a true professional surgeon will encourage their patients to ask as many questions as they feel they should. Here are a few ideas for questions you should ask:• How many years have you been practicing? • Are you a board-certified cosmetic surgeon? • How many facelift procedures have you carried out so far in your career? • Is it possible to speak to a previous patient? • Where will the surgery be performed and by whom? • What is the total cost of the procedure? • What type of anesthesia will be used, and who will administer it? • Have you received specific training in the field of plastic surgery? • How long have you been practicing in your current location? • Do you have admitting privileges in local hospitals? If so, please name them. • Are you a member of the ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons)? If you’d like to schedule a cosmetic surgery consultation with the team at Sarasota Surgical Arts, please feel free to contact us today.
