Is Submental Liposuction Permanent?

Submental liposuction, or chin liposuction, is a procedure that removes small fat buildups from underneath the chin. Sometimes referred to as a “double chin”, for some liposuction poses the best solution due to their genetics. Though, some patients worry that the fat under their chin will recur following surgery. Let’s discuss the commonly asked question, “Is submental liposuction permanent?”

The answer is that it can be permanent. When fat is removed via liposuction, it is permanently gone. However, it is impossible (and usually unsafe) to remove the fat in any given area of the body. Theoretically, the remaining fat cells can expand. However, this is fairly unlikely if weight remains stable.

Even if a patient gains weight following submental liposuction, they are more likely to gain weight in areas not treated with liposuction. When treating larger areas, this can cause uneven fat distribution. With the chin though, it usually just means that weight gained will likely not be put on in the chin.

It should be noted that this is different for every patient and the best way to ensure that the fat under the chin never returns is to maintain a stable weight and continue living a healthy lifestyle. Of course, there are factors outside of your control, such as medical conditions that can influence weight gain, but thankfully this usually does not majorly impact chin liposuction results for several years or decades, if at all.
