Is Otoplasty Permanent?
Otoplasty–or ear pinning surgery–is performed on both adults and children frequently. It is one of the only purely cosmetic surgeries widely performed on children. Due to this, there is a concern that additional surgeries may become necessary later on in life. Let’s look at the question, “Is otoplasty permanent?”
An otoplasty removes a small amount of skin and sometimes cartilage and creates the missing fold in the ear that causes them to stick out. As long as the ears are fully mature, which typically happens around age five, the results should be permanent. Like with any surgery, there is the possibility for revision, but this is uncommon when it comes to otoplasty.
When the surgery is performed on adults, it is also permanent. The ears are unlikely to shift much with age, though occasionally scarring may become more visible. Scarring from otoplasty is generally minimal and small. Many children will see their scars fade before adulthood.
