Osprey Breast Implant Types & Design
Most know saline and silicone are the two categories of breast implants available today. However, many more design details within these two categories play an essential role in their movement and appearance. Below, we have broken down the many facets of breast implants and how each detail affects the structure of the implant.
Saline or Silicone?
If you’re considering breast augmentation, Osprey, you are probably already leaning towards silicone implants. Silicone implants are the overall top choice for implant type. It’s not that saline implants are imperfect. In fact, saline implants have their own set of strengths that have made them a reliable choice.
Saline implants are safer than silicone upon implant rupture. Because the interior of the implant is sterile saline water that also occurs naturally in the body, the rupture of the implant will not put the patient at risk of complications. However, this doesn’t mean saline has a lower risk of rupture. In fact, saline implants aren’t as sturdy as silicone and have a slightly higher rupture chance. Another highlight of saline implants is that they can be filled during the surgery after Dr. Sessa expertly places them. This means the incision for saline implants can be smaller than the pre-filled silicone implant.
Silicone implants have a wider variety of options, a more realistic appearance and movement, and less chance of rupture. Gummy bear implants are the latest silicone implants that closely mimic the look and feel of natural breasts. They are not just named “gummy bear” for fun. The density of the implant is consistent with that of gummy bear candy, making them sturdier than other implants.
These factors are what put silicone in the top breast implant spot. Whatever you choose, Dr. Sessa can help you make an informed decision based on your expectations and stature.
Breast Implant Texture
The texture of breast implants is another key component when selecting an implant. Patients will feel smooth and textured implants before an Osprey breast augmentation.
- Smooth Implants: Smooth implants move around within the chest freely, allowing them to have a comparable motion to breast tissue.
- Textured Implants: Textured implants offer a more secure implant that attaches to the underlying tissue. They have less chance of unwanted drifting or hardening of the scar tissue.
Selecting An Osprey Breast Implant Shape
Now you know breast implants have different types, textures, and shapes. The shape is crucial because it highly affects the appearance of the breasts. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, there are only two shapes to choose from and color options are not included. The two choices for implant shape are:
- Round: Round implants are the original shape used for every breast augmentation. They are used in both saline and silicone and provide extra upper fullness to the breast tissue.
- Teardrop: The teardrop shape is new and only used with gummy bear implants. Teardrop-shaped implants are fuller at the bottom and taper towards the top, matching the natural shape of breast tissue.
Implant Profile
Implant profile affects how far the breasts protrude from the chest when looking at the side profile of the patient. There are three main profile options, all of which are better suited for different body types and aesthetic goals. The three implant profiles are:
- Low: Low-profile implants have the slightest protrusion and are primarily used on patients with broader chests.
- Moderate: Patients with an average or smaller chest wall tend to want a moderate implant profile. They offer a perfect middle ground between low and high protrusion.
High: A high implant profile protrudes the farthest from the chest and can sometimes look unrealistic on certain body types. They are better for patients with slim chests and shoulders.
