It’s normal for your first several weeks post-facelift to include some swelling. You may also notice that one side of your face seems to be more swollen than the other. While not everyone will see uneven swelling, it’s not an uncommon effect, either. This variation is usually just part of your healing process and is likely not a cause for concern.

At Sarasota Surgical Arts, we’re very familiar with facelift recovery and what patients can expect. Our goal is to help you understand why one side of your face may be more swollen than the other, what you can do about it, and when you can expect to see your final, rejuvenated results.

Understanding Recovery After A Facelift

Let’s start by talking about how facelifts work. During surgery at Sarasota Surgical Arts, Dr. Alberico Sessa skillfully lifts and tightens facial muscles and tissue, removes or redistributes excess fat, and re-drapes your skin for a more youthful, refreshed look. Because your facial anatomy, skin texture, and healing ability are unique, it’s no surprise that your post-surgical swelling may differ, too.

Right after your facelift, your body will begin the healing process by sending blood, lymph fluid, and other healing agents to the treated areas. This rush of fluid is what typically causes swelling. However, you may not notice perfectly symmetrical swelling because each side of your face may respond differently to the surgical manipulation.

What Might Lead To Uneven Swelling?

  • Surgical Technique & Manipulation: Even though Dr. Sessa uses precise and careful techniques, certain areas of your face may require more extensive adjustments. This can lead to slightly different healing responses.

  • Individual Anatomy: Your facial structure, muscle tightness, and blood supply may vary from one side to the other, leading to more noticeable swelling on one side.

  • Sleeping Position & Habits: If you tend to favor one side while sleeping or propping your head, that side may experience more fluid accumulation.

  • Lifestyle & Diet: Eating habits, hydration levels, and even stress can influence your body’s ability to heal. Poor hydration or a diet high in salt might lead to additional swelling.

What You Can Do To Minimize Swelling

  • Follow Your Post-Op Instructions: We can’t stress enough how important it is to stick to Dr. Sessa’s post-op guidelines. These will typically include keeping your head elevated, applying cold compresses (when recommended), and avoiding any strenuous activities until you’re cleared to return to your normal routine.

  • Stay Hydrated & Watch Your Diet: Drinking plenty of water can help flush out excess fluids, while reducing your sodium intake may help lessen swelling.

  • Gentle Massage: If Dr. Sessa approves, gentle facial massages or light lymphatic drainage can sometimes help reduce puffiness.

  • Sleep in an Elevated Position: Keep your head propped with pillows when you sleep to help fluid drain away from your face.
